NOORTJE René Tweehuysen (1957, Netherlands, Utrecht) completed his study at the University of the Arts Utrecht in 1983. René is typically a painter who works in the tradition of the Dutch art of painting. His portraits convey a modern atmosphere. In the technique used there are, however, similarities with the techniques of the 16th and 17th century Old Masters. He paints with oil and tempera on canvas or woodpanel. Recurring themes in René Tweehuysen’s work are: portraiture, human figure, urban/landscape and still life. The conceptualization of a new idea is always a long process. Tweehuysen says: ’I always have my own meaning with a work but I like the idea that paintings don’t give answers but ask questions. This way the viewer is given the opportunity to give their own interpretation. Situations that you have to finish in your own mind by awakening things in the mind’.

Over the years René has painted portraits for numerous individuals and notables, among others the portrait of Queen Beatrix. His work has been seen in many exhibitions throughout Europe and has previously been exhibited in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters 2005 Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. The portrait of his son ’Finn’ was selected for the BP Portrait Award Exhibition 2018 in the National Gallery in London. His painting ’Cannonball Man’ is one of the finalists in the 14th International ARC Salon.
